Dreams

And I quote,
3 major dreams:
1. being chased through snowy trails and streams in the dark of night by brown and polar bear cubs + moms
2. a brief rugby scenario where brian earley was also there and did not acknowledge me, no dogs. i was pleasantly surprised
3. damn i just forgot! dana called while I was chopping food for mom cooking, some weird stuff while laying over in philly while I hooked up the phone to my computer but kept getting pop ups and fighting viruses while she sang a song with psychedelic electronic visuals, also faxed Meesh / the team's fax machine?? ("tell emhsieh she left some of her stuff at our house, the place is messy but not trashed though") and I was all huh??? I've never been to Germany let alone her house hahaha and I def didn't trash the house either lol meesh and I were so confused... also where did she find her/our fax number?? so smart.
3.5 some big man coach was teaching some high school boys about lineouts and making zero sense, spewing wrong information and tactics everywhere. sue parker and I were both like wtf
4. battle around school area / tower where got shot but still teleported enemy to hospital afterward with dream apparition powers
5. running through the deserted empty streets of providence to try and get back to my car but the streets are pitch black and no lamp posts. super scary so I turned around to head back under the bridge to thayer street district where things are lively and poppin' and brightly lit.
6. stan was back in town! and told someone to read her blog
that was more than 3.
Some background: To hold all of the [non-zero (but likely less than 1) number of] fans over until my next update... here's exactly what I wrote down in my overflowing dream log on Monday when I awoke with sickness and promptly went back to sleep. In my very brief and blurry moments of consciousness I managed to get all of this down in a somewhat clear and organized manner. I was pleasantly surprised when I emerged from deep slumber 5 hours later to find this window into my subconscious brain. Enjoy!

ps. I have a lot of things in the blog pipeline, I promise! ...just a little too lazy (read: disorganized) to get myself together and post. They're coming soon! Happy holidays :)

Monthly health plug! Snute Fighting!

"For the economy to be healthy, America has to remain unhealthy."
An interesting read about how lifestyle can be pre-determined Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed

Sweet article from nyt about Li Na! I'm a fan. Break the mold!

Don't take Ibu! or what we used to call candy / Vitimin I on our rugby team haha. I've heard it from the Romero's (Paul, Jordan), and here it is again! Adverse health effects include Anemia, hearing loss, hypertension, miscarriage, and more. Alternatives:

  • Ginger capsules
  • Chinese skullcap / baicalin
  • omega-3 fatty acids
  • panax ginseng
  • holy basil
and more! they can be equivalent or better at reducing pain and inflammation.

Finally, Snute writes about Losing in Challenger as a full-time player forum link
my thoughts:

I can't help but thinking of that scene in She's the Man when Viola says to Duke, "I can relate!" in a super bro-y tone.

Tech in Healthcare

On August 22 I wrote this note to myself about tech in healthcare, following a presentation at work about using social media to increase or company's visibility. I didn't spend too much brain power on it beyond my initial thoughts but still think it's worth a share and a minute or two!

Digital Doc Infographic
Interesting... there's all this HYPE around tech in healthcare, but is it really the right direction? Didn't all this addiction and dependence on tech help bring about the obesity epidemic in America? Those countries out there that are much healthier than the US - do they rely on technology as much as we do? Or are we saying that their models won't work in our country because we can't change, not after how far we've gone down the rabbit hole. The only way to "save" us is to use what we're dependent on to make us better?
But like always, this is supremely bias toward the population with smart phones and good access to good, rich, technologically driven healthcare. Which always leaves behind the populations which need the most help - the lower earning individuals, rural folks, etc.
Blog this somewhere, Em!

This was really fun, especially speed running it! :P Air attack + air attack + air attack+...

Power Poses can help your career

...or prevent it from even happening. GAHH. It's not why I bombed it but certainly part of why, and something I noticed even while it was going on. >< Improve from this, [Makto]!!!

BKB

Continuing on the health train... (Boyles)KnowsBest this time!

Leg lowering, leg raises, firing up the glutes, dynamic lunges & skipping warmup... all that activation is what we did at Boyles! Bahh, so hard to do these in the office gym and not look silly going it alone though. Explosiveness is worth it.

This guy supports farmer's walks. ugh. so difficult. but would definitely spice up my workouts!

Toe touch progression and t-spine exercises! I can't stress enough, BKB! I'd forgotten about all the stuff we did outside of the main lifts. Shame on me. Looks like these things really are for the best, and are the reasons why I went 137->144 in a couple months.

Original BKB (Bydwell) still stands, of course.

Against the (American) Grain

2 Articles I read today that make me AMEN!

About Calories and Thermodynamics: http://www.allouteffort.com/2013/08/the-law-of-calories.html#more
My mom was right all along -- eating too quickly can make you fat! She's always right about these things... "don't drink Gatorade", "sleeping at regular times of night makes you taller" yeah, yeah :) It's all about the TYPE of energy you eat! And why I honestly have always thought that it's a bit silly for people to be so obsessed with counting calories, the pure numbers without regard to everything else!

On the American lifestyle: http://outofthewoodsfornow.tumblr.com/post/58690475122/aint-no-gyms-here
YUP. The dieting, running, and fitness class obsessed culture of our country is correlated with our huge rates of obesity right? In this sense, we need to find the Middle Way like other countries have. It allows them to be healthier and most importantly, happier! Like Ajahn David always said, "not too much, not too little". (I DO enjoy pushing myself to my limits in regards to rugby though, like how other countries enjoy running around playing futbol from grassroots to ultra-competitive environments. Just get out there and do it! Spontaneously! ...pickupquix app anyone?)

HAPPY SHA(r)K WEEK

Why Frances is so much better at engineering than I am! :)

The better way to learn:
A: Do grad school students remember everything they were taugh in college all the time?
A student who memorizes the entire physics curriculum is no more a physicist than one who memorizes the dictionary is a writer. Studying physics is about building skills, specifically the skills of modeling novel situations and solving difficult problems. The results in your textbook are just the raw material. You're a builder. Don't spend all your time collecting more materials. Collect a few, then build things.

Laura Shigihara - YOU DA BOMB

Been a long time fan of hers and just rediscovered these vids :) She always puts such a big smile on my face ^^ I especially love her story in the first vid. and "No Yoshi is an Island" are great words to live by. Love the message.

Ok I have to admit I was googling "starcraft figurine"... and it ended up bringing  me to such a nice place on the internet! Also her website has a great blog post about Inspiration. I  love that she does WoW dailies to get herself going! Using wow as a pathway to productivity is def not what comes to most people's minds first, but she's so right! There were definitely those days of vanilla wow when it was a great tool for dragging myself out of bed at 6AM :)

Bottom line, she rules.

lololol. you weren't expecting that, huh?

aaaand today's been the epitome of a rainy day: rain in the morning, rain in the afternoon, rain throughout the night. traffic, and feeling like I wanted to leave work and huddle with hot chocolate around a fire playing board games. this is awful sentence structure.

I'm also back on the SC2 cellophane (fen si) noodles bandwagon.

LIFE ADVICE

2 LinkedIn Articles I stumbled across:

"If you're learning, You'll never need to recharge"
Don't necessarily agree with everything or the title, but some words of wisdom in there!
The British author John le Carré once quipped, "The desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world." I couldn't agree more.
My work is also energizing because I believe I'm doing work that matters.
If you find meaning in your work and you go to work to learn about life, I doubt you'll ever have reason to recharge. The work itself will renew you.

Words of Wisdom

Wisdom from Shak. This is gold. She is an amazing person and I'm so lucky, blessed, and grateful that she's my friend. Love you Shak!
Hey guys, I really wish I could be there, but here's what I would say if I was. First, don't try to remember every detail from this meeting it might put your brain into overload. Just focus on the things that resonate with you or are relevant to your position. If you find yourself feeling stressed go back to basics...run fast, hit hard and low, targets out when passing, stay together on defense and COMMUNICATE. Another tip to stay calm...SAY EVERYTHING OUT LOUD, LOUD ENOUGH FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR YOU. If you keep saying everything you're going to do out loud and telling teammates what you need from them things get easier..you're body will pay more attention to what you need to do and you won't get caught up in your own head.  Finally, OUT-WORK your opposite. You won't be better than her in every way but you can expose her weakness. If she's bigger or hits harder, run faster.  If she runs faster, than hit her harder.  **Remember no matter how fast someone is you don't have to chase her until she runs past you.  So...track her down and get in her way!!!  Be a road block hit her, strip the ball whatever you have to do.  I love you all. Rookies trust your instincts and lean on your vets, Vets trust your experience because you know what good rugby feels like so be vocal on the field. Good luck guys!!!! Leave everything on the field, when you think you're body's got nothing left...trust me you have more left to give, just push a little harder.Let's play some Brown Rugby <3 Love,SHAK

An early summer reading list

From a friend at work, Frankenstein's Cat
...maybe when your life  isn't so busy doesn't have other things at a higher priority, you'll make time for some good feel-good reading, Em!

RUGBY article "Why play rugby?"
Well said! I agree with most of it. especially:

  • "Rugby is one of the most highly skilled, elegant sports I know. The word "elegant" might surprise people who don't know the game and see only a bunch of people on a field bashing into each other - but I can think of no better word... 'poetry in motion'."
  • "it is not too popular... People who play rugby, particularly women's rugby, do it for the love of the sport, period. There is no other reason. It's enourmously refreshing."
  • "rugby is also a game that is immediately accessible to all levels."
  • "it makes people reevaluate their assumptions about what it means to be a woman, to be feminine... There is a wonderful transformation during the season as recruits come to realize that being strong and muscular makes someone more beautiful, not less; that routinely tackling other women into the ground on the weekends not only doesn’t compromise femininity, it increases self-confidence and assertiveness; and that women really can do something that almost everything and everyone says we can’t do."
  • "the confidence and trust that springs out of rugby also has few parallels in other aspects of society, even in other sports."
  • "It's so damn fun."

and to go along with a feel-good vibe, here's a set I've been listening to at work by Area 6, who's a friend of a friend from college. Good beats!

I was temped to leave no words here in this post, as the video speaks for itself. But for secretary purposes, here's a TED talk by Frank Warren, founder of postsecret.com. Some secrets in his talk are chilling, others heartwarming... a wonderful talk all around.

March Megapost Pt2: Reading Time!

HuffPost's fav Tolkien quotes!

Good Boston Globe article about a good rugger. I love rugby. Losing eye rugby accident was blessing:
“If God said to me when I was 18, ‘I’m going to give you this sport and you’re going to love it. You’re not a great athlete; you’re an OK athlete, and it’s perfect for you. You’re going to play with both of your sons, one of your brothers, and with your dad. You will play touch rugby with both your daughters, and your wife. You’re going to make all these great friends and go to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales and have a blast, but you are going to have a day in Hell,’ I would’ve been, ‘Where do I sign?’

Back in the game

Ten points for Video Games!...ffindor
"Children with dyslexia have an easier time learning to read after playing action video games that don’t incorporate reading."

I like the work he's doing. This is a pretty awesome part of it: WearaBraille.

Also some things to think about:
Do I want to sign up for a sweet Boatshop summer camp?
Speaking of the boatshop... here's a vid I really enjoyed and is another reason why I wanna learn violin and get way better at guitar!

Kyle Maynard - No excuses

I wish I felt like I could write something here that is deserving of what Kyle Maynard is to the world, but this isn't the time for me. Just wanna keep track of this for now, and maybe if only one other person stumbles upon it here, know that it is definitely worth your time to hear more of Kyle's story.

A blog post he recently wrote about getting his groove back: http://kyle-maynard.com/how-i-got-my-groove-back/

I especially like the following quote. Had to re-read it a few times because I was casually reading too fast and had to take a second to really hear for real all the words written on the page.

It seems to me that principle is written in the fabric of the universe in many different ways. Like me, you probably know what happens when you over pursue something like a job that pays more money or even having someone else love us. The more weight we recklessly throw at those seemingly impassable walls, the more hopeless we feel. Yet, we slam ourselves against the wall. Over and over again. And as we continue, we lie to ourselves. We hear a voice saying, “If you only put a little more force, a little more weight behind the next attempt, you’ll eventually break it down.”
The lie is that no amount of force will break the wall down. It’s only when we stop long enough to learn to accept who we are, do we realize there was a door waiting there all along.
Of course I feel like it's a great universal principle to apply to my rugby/concussion situation. The doorway to reffing was waiting there all along! I just had to stop forcing myself to stick to my original plan and actually let things happen around me as they do. It is definitely a liberating realization. Thanks for reminding me, Kyle!

A Way of Life

Well said. All of it.

"A Mother's Perspective on Rugby"
http://kaiwhanarugbyworld.blogspot.com/2013/02/and-mothers-perspective-on-rugby.html

Some of the best parts (snaps):

On contact:

But unless you’ve grown up with it, it’s hard to understand that it’s not the same kind of contact as, say, football. It’s much more controlled, and there is more respect, and you are actually trying to make a proper tackle, whereas in football guys can just jump out of line and just charge at you and grab your legs. You can’t do that in rugby because you are responsible for the tackle, and if you miss a tackle, that puts your entire team under pressure.”

On inclusivity:
Something I love about rugby is that it seems to be all-inclusive; there are players of all sizes and abilities. Kleeburger, who is studying kinesiology at The University of Victoria in British Columbia and is coaching the rugby program there, says “Rugby is the one program in the school where nobody gets cut. We have a lot of guys who are there because they want to be a part of the team, and want to be a part of the rugby atmosphere; they don’t have maybe the same skills as some of the guys playing at a higher level, but they are still involved and they still feel like part of the group.”

On the *something special*
And there is something else. Rugby is not just about rugby. It’s about socializing, community, acceptance, team spirit, camaraderie – and creating life-long memories. As a mother, I like that. I want all of that for my kids.

On the life long community culture:
Kleeburger says, “Rugby is the sort of sport that people get so much out of it that they really want to give back. We have a lot of parents and ex-players who still want to be involved in it because they have had such a good, positive experience.” Rugby is a culture, one that keeps people involved, sometimes all through their lives.

On making you a better person:
“I would say I am fairly shy, so I think rugby has brought out an ability to be in social situations. I feel more comfortable being around a wide range of people. I think rugby generates a more well-rounded person.”

power lions :P
